Wines don’t just happen. Each one needs direction. They need soul.

For Winemaker Edgar Torres, a big part of finding that soul comes from music. These wines are a tribute to the songs that have inspired and guided Edgar during the winemaking process.

Each bottle is an invitation to get inside his head and groove, while enjoying a gorgeous red or white wine from a master of the craft.

About Songs

Songs is a project that I hold very close to my heart and brings us back to the beginning.

It is a celebration of music and the French varietals that started my winemaking journey. Each bottle is named after a song that is important to me and my family.

My Songs are testaments to that young man and his dream. Using only four barrels at most for each of the single varietal wines on this label, I am showcasing the grapes and the vineyards I believe possess the mystical ability to touch your soul the way they’ve touched mine.

THE SONG

"California" by The Lagoons is a tribute to the significant person in our lives, set against the idyllic backdrop of California's picturesque landscapes.

Just as we reserve a cherished bottle of wine for special moments with those who share our passion for wine, this song encapsulates the essence of relaxation and enjoyment. ‘California’ became a staple in our tasting room, played on repeat for its soothing ambiance.

The name 'California' for this wine not only celebrates this particular song but also invites our members and guests to reminisce about their favorite California-themed songs by iconic artists like 2Pac, Joni Mitchell, Phantom Planet, and The Mamas and the Papas. Each sip of our wine aims to evoke those fond memories, creating a harmonious blend of music, place, and flavor.

Vintage Notes

2023 vintage was fantastic for the whites and roses. Lots of winter rain and a much cooler growing season meant a longer hang time with lower sugar accumulation. Ultimately it allowed us to get a more fully evolved wine with great acidity and lower alcohol.

Vinification

Fermented using 100% saigneee juice. The rose had minimal skin contact (wine was on the skins for less than 30min.), and is done in a more elegant style than in the past. It was fermented and aged in neutral french oak barrels. 50 Cases Produced.

Tasting Notes

Composed of 100% Mourvedere the nose is fragrant with wild berries, citrus peel, wet stone and Mediterranean herbs. Layered, complex, with rich red toned fruit, this rose is right at home either as an aperitif or as a companion at the dinner table.

THE SONG

Ziggy Marley's hit song is a thought-provoking reminder to stay true to oneself and embrace one's uniqueness. The song encourages listeners to live life on their own terms, despite societal pressures and expectations.

Ziggy Marley sets the tone with his opening lines, emphasizing that it is crucial to break free from the monotony of life and trust one's instincts. He stresses that pretending to be someone else is not the way to achieve true happiness. Similarly, as a winemaker, it's essential to stay true to oneself and not be boxed into labels. By being authentic, one can overcome any obstacle and rise above all odds.

Vintage Notes

Overall, thanks to a relatively temperate growing season, the timing of the 2021 harvest is about a week or two later than in recent years, with most growers pulling the first of the core white wine grapes in late August. While the region has seen smoke from wildfires up north, it didn't affect the vineyards in Paso Robles.

The ongoing drought conditions are presenting growers with a double- edged sword of sorts. The good news is the dry conditions this vintage created smaller, more concentrated grapes, which is ideal for winemaking. While yields are lower, it produces more flavors, bolder colors, strong acidity, and manageable tannins. These conditions have winemakers feeling it's an epic vintage for quality.

Vinification

Fermented on native yeast, 33% whole cluster, on skin for 14-18 days. Aged for 22 months in 228L French oak barriques, 100% new.

Tasting Notes

This Grenache wine has a rich aroma of bright cherries, orange rind, cedar, and toasty oak, evocative of a classic Old Fashioned cocktail. On the palate, the cherry and orange notes are further accentuated, with the introduction of cranberry, warm rhubarb pie, and Christmas spices.

The wine finishes long, with a refreshing mix of mint, warm spices, and fresh herbs. The complexity and lush richness of this wine, reminiscent of a fine Chateauneuf-du-Pape, are remarkable, even without the use of syrah or mourvedre.

THE SONG

My wife, Erika, chose the song "Never Never" by Natural Vibrations, which beautifully conveys the singer's deep and unwavering love for his partner. The song begins with a declaration of the singer's devotion and commitment to his love, promising that their love will never waver, regardless of the distance between them.

The chorus powerfully emphasizes this steadfastness, with the singer asserting that he will never love another woman as much as he loves his current partner.

In essence, "Never Never" is a powerful proclamation of love and commitment. The singer's unwavering devotion to his partner is evident throughout the song, and he emphasizes that their love will endure even during the toughest times.

Tasting Notes

This Syrah has all the makings of a Santa Barbara classic, with aromas of eucalyptus, green olive tapenade, black pepper, and fresh cut violets. On the palate, it delivers rich, complex flavors of dark chocolate and blackberry compote, showcasing impressive ripeness. The silky tannins give way to a lingering finish, where salted caramel and dark chocolate flavors are ever-present.

THE SONG

When it comes to naming our Cabernet Franc, I always turn to my son Evan's playlist. As the father grape to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Cabernet Franc often takes a back seat in blends, sacrificing itself for the sake of its children. Similarly, Donavon Frankenreiter's song "Call Me Papa" is a beautiful tribute to the important people in his life.

The chorus of the song is a touching exchange between two people, with the singer offering to be the other's protector or "papa", and the other being his "baby". The verse continues with the assertion that no matter what happens or where either of them are, the singer will always be there for them

Tasting Notes

This Cabernet Franc features fruit sourced from Frogtown Vineyard, located the Geneseo District. The soil is sandy with rocks and interspersed with clay, where the sand provides the wine with beautiful complexity in the aromatics, and the clay adds muscle and tannin to allow it to stand up to the oak and extend its cellar time. On the nose, I get a convergence of boysenberry compote, fresh sage and graham cracker.

The palate shows its heft and grows more complex, adding spice, rhubarb and juicy red fruit that ride beautifully integrated tannins into a lengthy, sumptuous finish. It’s a wine that will continue to evolve as it opens up in your glass, so try to take your time, or decant it for 20 minutes or so.

THE SONG

Introducing the new Don Alfonso and the Inspirational Song "El Hijo del Pueblo". Many of my long-time members have asked for the return of Don Alfonso, a Cabernet Sauvignon that I once made that pays tribute to my dad, Alfonso – well, here it is! But that's not all – I also want to share a beautiful song with you that my dad selected for this wine, since it tells a powerful story, similar to his own life. "El Hijo del Pueblo" translates to "The Son of the Town" and is about a man who rises from humble beginnings to achieve success.

Vicente Fernández's emotive voice brings the lyrics to life, capturing the struggles and triumphs of everyday people who chase their dreams against all odds. "El Hijo del Pueblo" is an anthem for anyone who has faced adversity and emerged stronger. Its message is simple yet powerful – with determination and resilience, we can overcome any obstacle.

The song's relatable storyline strikes a chord with listeners, evoking empathy and inspiring them to pursue their aspirations.

Tasting Notes

This one comes from Paper Street Vineyard, in Willow Creek, Paso Robles. This vineyard has proved time and time again that it can produce phenomenal fruit in any vintage. With a nose of blackcurrant, dark berries and cassis, this wine immediately draws you in.

The blackcurrant continues through mid-palate that evolves into notes of dark chocolate and plum. You may notice secondary notes of cedar, leather and tobacco that add even more complexity to this wine. Enjoy now or lay down for up to 10 years.

THE SONG

This song holds a special place in my heart, as it was introduced to me by my father-in-law. The lyrics tell a story of love and heartbreak, which takes me back to a time when I was just starting  to date my now-wife. I remember the pain of being left behind when she went off to college in Hawaii. However, like Alan Jackson, who wrote the song as a tribute to his wife, we persevered through the hardships, and have now been happily married for 18 years. The song's lyrics remind us of the journey we've been through, from making vows to experiencing the ups and downs of life.

Despite the difficulties, we've learned to appreciate each other more and more. The song acknowledges the changes that come with time, but Jackson's lyrics also mark the milestones that brought the couple back together. The song ends with a reminder that there is still so much more to come in their love story, and even the hard moments will be something to cherish. It's a beautiful ode to true love and the struggles that come with it.

Vintage Notes

The Harvest began in the last week of August with early ripening varieties. The heat spikes in August and September caused some vineyards to pick varieties not typically ready at that time, which was around 10 days earlier than normal.

September into October continued to be warm yet averaging on what would be considered normal conditions. Wineries are reporting high acidity, exceptional flavor development, and deep color extraction that will all lead to a well-balanced 2020 vintage.

Vinification

Fermented on native yeast, on skin for 14-18 days. Aged for 24 months in 228L French oak barriques, 100% new.

Tasting Notes

It’s an opulent wine, expressing classic Merlot characteristics in a deeply concentrated way. We’ve got brooding aromas of violets and blackberries on the nose, with inflections of herbal notes. The palate further elaborates the small fruits while adding briny and green olive component, while the herbs are underpinned with notes of coffee beans and baking spice.

This Merlot finishes with striking balance and finesse, making it a true example of where the old world meets the new world of wines.

Our Story

My name is Edgar Torres. I started making wine on my own back in 2007 in Paso Robles under the label, 'Bodega De Edgar '... but having my own label didn’t happen overnight. For several years prior to Bodega, I worked hard in cellars and wineries, saving what I'd earned, with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and experience.

I'd work seven days a week, and I never turned down an opportunity to grow as a winemaker. By 2007, I was able to afford four barrels and could embark on my lifelong dream of making my own wine, my own way. I've come a long way since making those first 1,200 bottles, and I'm indebted to those in my 'la familia', and in my industry, who helped me grow to the point where I can finally return to my roots.
