THE SONG
This wine was named for the first release of Songs Grenache because it is the first grape that I ever made into wine and that made me fall in love with wine in 2005. During harvest we would play Leon Bridges on repeat and the song Coming Home always reminded me of the journey with this varietal. Also, I have been feeling that I am back home this year as I am working primarily with Paso fruit. This vintage sources grenache from Paper Street Vineyard in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles and Kimsey Vineyard, located in Santa Barbara County. If you have a favorite song that takes you home, then grab a glass and enjoy this bottle!
Vintage Notes
The 2018 reminds me a lot of the 2016 when warm weather in April kick-started the season on the early side, followed by a moderate July and very cool August. Typical of our autumn weather, a gentle, late heat spell brought the vintage home.
There was nary a day over 100F from veraison (the change of color of the grapes during ripening on the vine) through harvest, my favorite kind of season. Even more important than daytime highs, nighttime lows were downright cold all summer, preserving good natural acidity.
Vinification
Fermented on native yeast, 33% whole cluster, on skin for 14-18 days. Aged for 22 months in 265L Hungarian & French oak barriques, 100% new.
Tasting Notes
This Grenache is west side Paso the whole way through from aromatics to finish. It starts with a subtle herbaceousness like delicate sage. Red fruits and floral come next with pomegranate tea, rose hips and rosewater. A character that reminds us of the holidays with bright cranberry and a beautiful oak spice. Its candied/burnt orange aromatic that leads to flavors of cherry supported by toasted sweet wood spice reminded us of a perfect Old Fashioned. Medium bodied with a great balance of structure and alcohol.
