THE SONG
“Home” by Jack Johnson, is a song that was selected by my wife Erika. I always ask her to help me name this wine, because Syrah is her favorite. When she was pregnant with Evan, we would listen to the Jack Johnson album “From Here to You Now” on repeat. You might remember, my last vintage of Syrah was named “I Got You” from the same album.
Erika was drawn to this song because of the beauty and sweet sentiment of the lyrics, “So I, try, to understand, what I can't hold in my hand, and where ever we are, home is there too and if you, could try to find it too, cause this place is overgrown into with works in bloom, home is wherever we are, if there's love there too.”
The balance between work and life is a challenge for us all, especially when both partners are driven in their own careers and personal endeavors, but we each have a goal to make time with our son a priority, doing things that nourish us as a family. Home is that place for us, where the heart is, and where we always have Syrah on hand.
Vintage Notes
The Harvest began in the last week of August with early ripening varieties. The heat spikes in August and September caused some vineyards to pick varieties not typically ready at that time, which was around 10 days earlier than normal.
September into October continued to be warm yet averaging on what would be considered normal conditions. Wineries are reporting high acidity, exceptional flavor development, and deep color extraction that will all lead to a well-balanced 2020 vintage.
Vinification
Fermented on native yeast, 30% whole cluster, on skin for 14-18 days. Aged for 28 months in 228L Hungarian oak barriques, 100% new.
Tasting Notes
Two barrel production of 100% Syrah sourced from Zotovich Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. 30% whole cluster and aged in 100% new Hungarian oak barrels for 28 months. On the nose, this classic cool climate Syrah screams “Santa Barbara” with eucalyptus, green olive tapenade, black pepper and fresh cut violets on the nose.
The palate bursts with flavors of dark chocolate and blackberry compote, showing incredible ripeness in spite of its complexity. The finish goes on and on, with lingering silky tannins, carrying salted caramel and dark chocolate.
